In spite of all the serious literature, the class is conducted in a lighthearted atmosphere of laughter and bonhomie, and Coumans' own enormous joie de vivre is reflected in the insertion into the syllabus of tasty recipes, comic sketches, and even the French translation of Hemingway's delightful paean to Paris, A Moveable Feast.
Classes include: Lecture, writing, vocabulary, and grammar exercises.
Coumans believes that developing a command of grammar, vocabulary, and idiom is vital, but the acquisition of a French sensibilité is equally important. A strong emphasis is placed on laying a foundation in French culture. Students memorize the fables of LaFontaine, verses that are part of the bedrock of every French child's education.
